NIGERIAN MUSICIAN ALBAN UZOMA NWAPA BIOGRAPHY
Alban Uzoma Nwapa (born 26 August 1957), better known by his stage name Dr. Alban, is a Nigerian-Swedish recording artist and producer with his own record label, Dr. Records. Alban was born Alban Uzoma Nwapa into a middle-class family of 10 children in Oguta, Imo state, Nigeria. He is Igbo. He got his secondary education at Christ The King College and spent most of his youth in his hometown of Oguta. At age 23, he traveled to Sweden to study dentistry.
To finance his studies, Dr. Alban became a DJ at the Stockholm club Alphabet Street. Very quickly, his name became widely known, especially since he often sang to the records he put on turntables. DJ René Hedemyr discovered him. Alban finished his studies and opened his own dentistry practice, keeping his DJ-ing as a lucrative sideline.
In 1990, he met Deniiz Pop from the SweMix label and together with Denniz and the rap queen, Leila K released his first record, ‘Hello Afrika’ which was a declaration of love for his African home and included hits like ‘Hello Afrika’ and ‘No Coke’.
In 1991, he released his album titled ‘One Love’ which had the European hit single ‘It’s my life’, reaching the number 1 spot in Israel and Australia and number 2 spot in Switzerland, Norway and the UK. In 1992, this hit single ‘It’s my Life’ was used as background music for a Tampaz advert.
His third album, ‘Look who is talking’ was released in 1994 and earned him his first Global Certification Awards from his home Country, Sweeden.
He founded his own record label ‘Dr Records’ and went on to release his 1996 album ‘Born in Africa’ under his own label.
In 1997, he released a compilation album entitled ‘The very best of 1990-1997’. He released a new album in 2007, ‘Back to basics’ which was only sold on the internet through his official website and in 2008, released ‘I love the 90s’.
On 15 February 2014, in Gothenburg, Dr Alban teamed up with Jessica Folcker performing last with the song ‘ Around the World’ to win the chance to represent Sweeden at the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 in Copenhagen, Denmark.
He has been nominated for several awards including Echo Award for Best International Rock/Pop Male Artist and Grammy Award for Club/Dance of the Year. World Music Award for World’s Best Selling African Artist. He has sold over 16 million records worldwide.
Dr. Alban is married to Kinher Mansson and they have two daughters.
